Buyuk Perhiz ve Cumhuriyet Bayrami / Lent and Independence Day

Dün ve bugün Estonya'da önemli iki tarihti. Dün, 'vastlapaev' dedikleri, hristiyan aleminde 'ramazan' benzeri, büyük perhiz günlerinin başlangıcıydı. Her diyetten önceki gün, ağır yemek farzı çerçevesinde, burada da geleneksel vastlakukkel dedikleri tatlıyı yedik. ekte bir resmi bulunmakta

Bu gün ise, ayrı öneme sahip bir gündü: 24 Şubat Estonya'nın bağımsızlığı. Sabah 06:40'da diğer değişim öğrencileriyle buluşup, bağımsızlık kutlamalarına katıldık. Şarkılar söylendi daha sonra da savaşta şehit olan öğrencilerin anıtına çiçek konuldu. Linkte de onunla ilgili bir kaç resim bulunmakta.

yesterday and today were two important days for Estonians. The former was vastlapaev, or the shrove day, indicating the beginning of the lent. Since, as a rule of thumb, every diet begins with a heavy meal, Estonians also have their special, calorie-full Estonian dessert: vastlakukkel. attached is a picture of it.



Today , on the other hand, is an important secular day. 24th of February marks the celebration of the Estonian Independence, and for that, we gathered at 06:40 at the town hall square, and celebrated this event in the Estonian way. We (a lot of exchange students and Estonians) sang national songs, and joined the parade to leave some flowers at a statue that commemorates the student martyrs who were fighting for Estonian independence. With those events, we concluded our long weekend, and tomorrow is another work day.....

ne zamandir yazamiyordum, çünkü iş vesaire, beni ziyadesiyle meşgul etmekteydi. Bir de her oturusumda uzun uzun yazdığım için, bloguma yaklaşımımı gereksiz yere ciddileştirdim, sanki her oturuşumda uzun yazmam gerekiyormuş gibi bir beklentiye girdim. Ama şimdi buna bir son diyorum, ve artık daha sık ama daha kısa yazmaya çalışacağım.

Ahoy!

I have been neglecting here for quite some time, but at least I had a valid excuse: swamped with worked throughout the week. Moreover, I also wanted to write something long, because I have been doing that in the previous posts, and I unnecessarily increased the expectations, and kinda failed to live up to them :) Note to self : write short, but more frequently! Yes, I will try to do it from now on.

As an apology, I prepared this photo album. Please have a look , and I hope you enjoy it.

Şarkılı Devrim / The Singing Revolution

Dolu dolu geçen bir hafta sonunda kısa bir özet yazmak istedim. Bu haftanın herhalde en önemli olayı işe başlamış olmam. Evet, enstitüde bır ofisim bile var, 3 asistanla daha paylaştığım.

Tez için ilk adımları atmaya başladım. Geçen hafta daha çok literatür taramasıyla geçti. bu hafta Toz metalurjisi laboratuarında üretim üzerine çalışacağım. Bunları demişken aslında tezimin de ne olduğundan bahsetmemde fayda var herhalde. Benim tezim, nanoindentation (nano- batırma) tekniğiyle, Titanyum Karbıd ve Nikel bazlı seramik metallerin üzerindeki sert kaplamaların mekanik özelliklerini araştırmak. Bunun için öncelikle bu tarz seramik metallerin üretilmesi, kaplanması, yüzey analizi ve sonra da nano batırma gibi tekniklerle mekanik özelliklerin bulunması aşamalarını takip edeceğim. 

İş dışında da bir çok sosyal aktivite vardı bu hafta. Laser silahlarla savaş oyunu oynadık (paintball'ın lazerli olanı), Estonya'nın bağımsızlığıyla ilgili 'kurtuluş' tadında bir belgesel izledik, daha sonra şehirde bir yarışma yaptık, ve en son da otobüsle tüm şehri gezdirdiler.

Bu aktivitelerin içinde özellikle bir tanesi benim çok ilgimi çekti. Şarkılı Devrim, ya da The Singing Revolution... Estonya'nın sovyet işgalinden kurtuluşunu anlatan bir belgesel. İlginç bir kurtuluş hikayeleri var, sovyet işgali altındayken, memleketleriyle ilgili bir şarkıyı kendilerine şiar edinmişler, ve stalinin sosyalizmi altında bu şarkıyla kendi kimliklerini korumuşlar, ve gorbacov'un gelisinden sonraki politik gelişmelerden de faydalanıp, kurşun atmaktan ziyade şarkılarını söyleyerek  bağımsızlıklarını  ilan etmişler. Bu film de, bu hikayeyi çok güzel anlatıyor. Bir şekilde denk gelen herkese, izlemelerini tavsiye ederim.

Burada tekrar fotoğraf çekmeye başladım. Yeterince güzel resim olunca, bu blog'a bir albüm eklemeyi düşünüyorum.

here is a quick summary of what I have been up to during the last week. Probably the most important event was my starting to work at the institute. I even have an office, that I share with three colleagues. I think it is a very good start...

I started working on my thesis as of Monday. Last week was mostly about research on the topic. Saying that, I should probably mention the toic as well. My thesis will be about using nanoindentation technique to investigate the mechanical properties of non tungsten based cermets and thin hard coatings on them. I will be working on every step, starting from manufacturing of the samples with Powder metallurgy, to preparation of surfaces and testing the samples with nanoindantation.

Besides work, this week was also laden with a lot of social activities, like laser war game (sorta like paintball, but with laser), watching the singing revolution, city rally and city bus tour.

One activity stood out amongst that list: the singing revolution, which is a documentary that talks about estonian history, and focuses on how Estonia regained their independence after more than 40 years of soviet occupation. They have not used weapons, nor was there any blood shed, instead they were united by a song, and hence the name 'the singing revolution'. I generally have a liking for independance stories, therefore it was a worthwhile experience for me, and I can recommend you to watch it, should you one day come across...

One final thing, I started taking photos again. Once I have enough picures, I am planning to add an album to this blog too. One picture is worth a thousand words, right?
